Did You Know?

The name Altapass is a railroad gift!

Alta (meaning high) and pass (noting McKinney Gap) were combined in the early 1900's by the Clinchfield Railroad to name the popular community/resort.

The community disappeared when the Clinchfield discontinued passenger services and the the highway went through Gillespie Gap, bypassing McKinney Gap altogether.

Today, the station and all remains of the hotels and golf course are gone.

Stories of Altapass: The same tales and music you loved hearing at the Orchard!

Musician Randy Flack and historian, Bill Carson have blended their talents to tell the Stories of Altapass on a new CD. The Orchard's stretch of the Blue Ridge is described as the most historically active portion of the entire 460 mile length of the Parkway. We are proud that local mountain residents continue to share stories of their families with us.

Storyteller Carson weaves these tales along with Randy Flack, who supplied the wonderful music that reflects the spirit of the times. These stories, and more, are also available in Bill Carson's book, Stories of Altapass (both CD and book are available in the orchard shop and online store).
